Hyderabad: In a major push for environmental stewardship, Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) Director General Abhay Bhakre said they have rolled out Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) and urged State Designated Agencies (SDAs) of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and other States for achieving Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ambitious initiative.

The mission aims to inspire individuals to contribute to India's climate goals. Bhakre was speaking at the 22nd formation day of the BEE in New Delhi on Saturday evening.

According to him, in 2022-23, BEE ensured savings of 50.98 million tonnes of oil equivalent (MTOE). BEE was set up by the Government of India on March 1, 2002, under the Energy Conservation Act, 2001 to reduce power intensity of the Indian economy within the framework of the new legislation.

Bhakre asked the SDAs to make the LiFE programme successful through grassroots involvement and strategic actions. He said both Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and Hyderabad in Telangana are the focus areas being cosmopolitan cities to make LiFE mission a grand success. The mission aims to mobilise one billion individuals globally and make 80 per cent of India's villages and urban areas environmentally friendly by 2028.

In his address, he highlighted the remarkable achievements in energy efficiency and announced that the adoption of energy efficiency schemes and programs of BEE led to substantial energy savings in the order of 50.98 MTOE for the year 2022-23. These initiatives resulted in thermal energy savings of 24.68 MTOE and electricity savings totalling 306.55 billion units, translating into huge monetary savings worth Rs194,320 crore per annum and a reduction in CO2 emissions by approximately 306.40 million tonnes annually.
